TAT TVAM ASI May 31, 2007

God what is he ? Where is he ? How will I find him? These questions keep pestering me.“tat tvam asi” means god is in self. There are many theories related to divinity. Some believe in duality that is God is transcend , eternal, he is infinite, he is not in matter. Some believe in non-duality that is God is immanent present in every matter. Some believe God is the perfect balance of immanence and transcendence.I have not understood his true meaning , for me he is the source of inspiration.

These two lines explains the meaning of god to me.

“Tejo si tejo mayi di, viryam asi viryam mayi di, balam asi balam mayi di,Ojo si ojo mayi di, manyur asi manyum mayi di, saho si saho mayi di”

He bestows us with radiance, valour, strength, energy and gives us power to fight wrong. I often asked people the reason of our existence. Some books have mentioned about the life of ignorant he takes birth , grows , mates continues his race and dies. This is not the real reason of our birth. Even animals do the same thing. We have to find the reason. We have to come out of the “maya” the world created by God filled with mutable objects. We have to unveil the worldly objects to know the truth.

Swami Vivekananda said

“Man is like a infinite spring coiled up in a small box, and that spring is trying to unfold itself and all the social phenomena that we see are the result of this trying to unfold.”

Most of the people get satisfied if they can identify themselves in a society. If they can find a meaning of self among the group of people. This is submission to the crowd around you. Is this the real satisfaction ? I don’t know what life means. I feel that life is like a competitive exam where the examination paper and the pattern is not set by us, we have not framed the rules of exam, The question paper is given to us whether it is good or bad, tough or easy. But it depends on us how we fare in the exam. A wise person succeeds in the exam and an obstinate looses the battle. In the same way we do not decide the rules in the present world. We face situations which are mixture of good and bad. If we make our choices properly we emerge as winner. But if we do the contrary driven by our passion and do not act in an intelligent way then we fail.

Chand, if your intention was to give a serious thought about “tat tvam asi” – you’d probably want to be more rigorous when you use your language. It is interesting to note the manner of your usage of the word “God” with a “G” as well as a “g”.

It might be a good idea to note how atheism is viewed – from a modern sense as well as from a traditional Indian sense – note that Buddhist and Jainist traditions are atheistic according traditional Indian sense – to understand more about God, god and the sense of the usage of Brahman in Indian texts. Have a nice time exploring.
All the Best!
